Registration and Travel Prizes for up to 3 Innovators each year! The Banff Pork Seminar is proud to offer a chance for pork producers, herdspeople and their consultants to "strut their stuff" as a technology innovator and showing the rest of us how to put it into practice!

The 2011 Dr. F.X. Aherne Prize for Innovative Pork Production

  • Up to 3 prizes to be awarded, valued at $1,800 each (no cash value - prizes must be accepted as awarded)
  • Free registration to the 2011 Banff Pork Seminar, January 18-21, and accommodation for the innovator and a guest (based on double occupancy, maximum 3 nights at Banff Centre)
  • Up to $800 reimbursement for travel expenses to the Seminar
  • Recognition by peers and the pork industry at the Banff Pork Seminar
What can be entered? Any innovation...big or small!!!
  • An original solution you have developed to answer pork production challenges or creative use of a known technology.
  • The innovation can apply to any segment of pork production, such as feeding, breeding, disease control/prevention, manure management, ventilation, facility or enterprise management, pork quality and safety.
  • Not all innovations are complex - simple ideas can be very effective solutions.
  • Research at publicly funded institutes is not eligible. Commercial research may be used to support the on-farm innovation.
How do I enter?

Read the Contest Rules listed below, complete the Application Form and send along with your description, photos and details of how this innovation improved pork production.

Entries can be made at any time of the year. Entries must be received by October 30, 2010 to be eligible to compete for the 2011 Award.

2011 Contest Rules:

  • Entrants can be owners, production managers, herdspeople or consultants in the North American pork industry
  • All innovations entered must be in use on a farm in North America at the time of the entry.
  • Entries will be judged based on their originality and creativity to implement a new technology on a commercial pork production unit. The candidate must demonstrate that the selection, implementation, and evaluation of this technology resulted in an improvement in at least one of the following areas:
    1. Improved productivity of the individual animal or overall herd, compared to a period (not less than three months) prior to the innovation.
    2. Improved profitability of the entire production unit or production area.
    3. Improvement to working conditions, resulting in improved morale and/or productivity for barn workers
    4. Improvements in animal well-being, including freedom from thirst & hunger, discomfort, pain/injury and disease.
    5. Reducing impact of the production unit on the environment.
    6. Improvements to pork quality and safety.
  • Entries that use a product or service that is commercially available must clearly demonstrate a new and innovative use or application.
  • In addition to above criteria, commercial companies making application should demonstrate the effectiveness of the technology under North American conditions.
  • Entrants who wish to patent or maintain selling rights to the innovation are advised to seek legal counsel prior to making an application for the award. Photographs, drawings, and related materials submitted for judging become the property of the Banff Pork Seminar and may be used for publicity purposes by the Banff Pork Seminar Advisory Committee.
  • Deadline for entries is October 30, 2008. Entries received as of that date will be judged in November by the Banff Pork Seminar Prize Committee. Decisions of the Committee are final and application materials will not be returned to applicants.
  • The Committee will choose up to three (3) entries to be awarded the prize and will display the materials used for entry at the Seminar.
  • Winners will be notified by December 1st. Prize applies only to the 2011 Banff Pork Seminar. Prizes must be accepted as awarded and are not transferable to another person, nor to a future Banff Pork Seminar.
  • Unsuccessful entries can reapply in future years providing the technology is still in operation on the farm.
