The Banff Pork Seminar is proud to offer a chance for pork producers, herdspeople and their consultants to "strut their stuff" as a technology innovator and showing the rest of us how to put it into practice! The 2012 Dr. F.X. Aherne Prize for Innovative Pork Production includes:
An original solution developed to answer pork production challenges or a creative use of a known technology. Not all innovations are complex – simple ideas can be very effective solutions. The innovation can apply to any segment of the pork industry; such as feeding, breeding, ventilation, disease control and prevention, manure management, facility or enterprise management, pork quality and safety. How do I enter?Read the Contest Rules and complete the Application Form available online. With your application, send a succinct outline description in 400 words or less how this innovation works and details of how this innovation improved pork production. Include up to five supporting documents, which could include visuals (video, photographs), impact statements or letters of support, financial statements, production data, design plans, drawings, or any other materials that you feel will aid the judges in understanding the innovation and its impact on the production enterprise. Submit five copies of the complete application. Electronic submissions only require one copy. Your total application package and supporting documents should not exceed 20 pages. Phone: 780-492-3651 2012 Contest Rules and Adjudication Process:Eligibility Entrants can be owners, production managers, herdspeople or consultants in the pork industry anywhere in Canada, United States or Mexico. Individuals may submit his or her own innovative technology or may be nominated. All innovations entered must be in use on a farm in Canada, United States or Mexico at the time of the application. Previously submitted entries who were unsuccessful may reapply in future years providing the technology is still in operation. Research at publicly-funded institutes is not eligible. Commercial research may be used to support the on-farm innovation. Entries that use a product or service that is commercially available must clearly demonstrate a new and innovative use or application. Entrants are expected to attend the Banff Pork Seminar on January 17-20, 2012 to receive their award in person.* Entrants who wish to patent or maintain selling rights to the innovation are advised to seek legal counsel prior to making an application for the award. Entrants agree that photographs, drawings, and related materials submitted for judging become the property of the Banff Pork Seminar and may be used for publicity purposes by the Banff Pork Seminar Advisory Committee. Judging Criteria The Committee will choose up to three (3) entries to be awarded the prize & may display the materials used for entry at the Seminar. Entries will be judged based on their originality and creativity to implement a new technology on a commercial pork production unit. The candidate must demonstrate that the selection, implementation, and evaluation of this technology resulted in an improvement in at least one of the following areas:
In addition to above criteria, commercial companies making application should demonstrate the effectiveness of the technology under North American conditions. Important DatesEntries must be received by October 28st, 2011 to be eligible to compete for the 2012 Award. Entries received as of that date will be judged in November by the Banff Pork Seminar Prize Committee. Decisions of the Committee are final and application materials will not be returned to applicants. Winners will be notified by December 1st, 2011. Prizes apply only to the 2012 Banff Pork Seminar and are not transferable to future Banff Pork Seminar. Prizes must be accepted as awarded and may be claimed by the innovator or nominator. *Winners are expected to be present January 19th, 2012 to accept the award. *If the award recipient is not available to accept the award at the awards ceremony, the nominator may accept the award on his/her behalf and will be eligible for the complementary accommodation and expense reimbursement. If neither the award recipient or nominator are available to attend the awards ceremony another party may accept the award but that individual will not be eligible for accommodation or travel expense reimbursement.
